It is with profound sorrow that we honor the life and legacy of Sgt. Jonathan “John” Schlager, whose unexpected passing at the age of 44 has left an immeasurable void in the hearts of his family, friends, colleagues, and the entire community he faithfully served.
John dedicated his life to serving others with honor, courage, and compassion. As an Air Force reservist and a member of the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office since 2012, he built a distinguished career marked by professionalism, leadership, and unwavering commitment to public service. Throughout his years of service, he earned the respect and admiration of fellow deputies and community members alike. In 2013, he was recognized as Deputy of the Year, a testament to his exceptional work ethic and dedication to excellence.
Among his many accomplishments, John received the Life Saving Award for helping save the life of a critically injured victim during a violent home invasion. His actions reflected the qualities that defined him throughout his career—selflessness, bravery, and a willingness to step forward when others needed help most.
Beyond his badge and uniform, John was a devoted husband and loving father who treasured his family above all else. He was deeply committed to those he loved and found great joy in spending time with them. Friends and coworkers remember him as a mentor, leader, and loyal companion whose kindness, humor, and encouragement left a lasting impact on everyone he met.
John was also a talented musician and accomplished guitarist who shared his passion for music with others. Whether serving his community, mentoring fellow deputies, or performing on stage, he approached every aspect of life with authenticity and enthusiasm.
We extend our deepest condolences to John’s wife, child, family, friends, and members of the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office. His legacy of service, leadership, compassion, and love will continue to inspire all who knew him.
Sgt. Jonathan “John” Schlager will be deeply missed, forever remembered, and never forgotten.
