A legendary figure in Army aviation, Crandall became widely known for his heroic actions during the Battle of Ia Drang on November 14, 1965. Then a major serving with the 229th Assault Helicopter Battalion, he demonstrated exceptional bravery while supporting soldiers under intense enemy fire at Landing Zone X-Ray.
As combat conditions worsened and helicopter operations were suspended due to heavy enemy resistance, Crandall refused to leave the troops isolated on the battlefield. Displaying remarkable determination and selflessness, he repeatedly flew his helicopter into the dangerous landing zone to deliver ammunition, supplies, and evacuate wounded soldiers. Despite facing constant enemy fire, he completed 22 missions throughout the day, helping save numerous lives and providing critical support to forces engaged in fierce combat.
His actions became one of the most celebrated examples of courage in military aviation history. More than four decades later, on February 26, 2007, he was awarded the Medal of Honor, the nation’s highest military decoration, in recognition of his extraordinary heroism.
